Environment

The water environment is central to the services we provide every day.

We rely on rivers, reservoirs, groundwater, catchments and coastal waters to supply clean water, treat wastewater and support healthy communities. We also have a responsibility to protect and improve those natural systems for the future.

Our environmental approach focuses on managing water carefully, improving river and coastal water quality, taking effective climate action, using resources responsibly, and supporting nature and communities to thrive. We are investing in our networks, reducing leakage and demand, improving monitoring, cutting emissions and working with partners to deliver better environmental outcomes.

Our Bluespaces partnership funding scheme supports projects that improve the water environment for customers and wildlife alike.

Projects include habitat creation, wetland restoration and improved access to coasts and rivers.

We know that environmental improvement depends on long-term investment, strong operational performance and partnership. Many of the challenges facing rivers, coasts, catchments and wildlife cannot be solved by one organisation alone.

That is why we work with environmental partners, local authorities, regulators, landowners, farmers, communities and customers to understand pressures and deliver practical solutions. Our approach combines infrastructure investment with innovation, nature-based solutions, better monitoring and local partnership projects. By looking at whole catchments and the communities connected to them, we can make better decisions and deliver improvements that support both the environment and the people who depend on it.
