Climate change affects the services we provide and the environment we depend on.

More frequent extreme weather, changing rainfall patterns, drought risk and rising temperatures can all affect water resources, wastewater systems, asset resilience and supply chains.

Our work focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable generation and adapting our services so we can continue to provide reliable water and wastewater services in a changing climate.

Reducing emissions

We have committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 by 2050.

Reducing emissions requires action across many areas of the business, including energy efficiency, renewable generation, process emissions, fleet, procurement and capital delivery.

In 2025/26, greenhouse gas emissions from our water activities were 109,771 tonnes CO₂e, compared with a target of 99,645 tonnes CO₂e, largely reflecting the operational impact of dry weather during the summer. Emissions from wastewater activities were 91,357tonnes CO₂e, compared with a target of 97,380 tonnes CO₂e, meaning we outperformed this measure, mainly due to lower natural gas use and increased biomethane production.

Building climate resilience

Adapting to climate change is as important as reducing emissions.

We consider climate risks in long-term planning, including our Water Resources Management Plan, Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan and investment decisions. This includes planning for drought, flooding, power resilience, changing raw water conditions and the impacts of extreme weather on our assets and operations.

Our climate-related reporting explains how these risks and opportunities are governed, assessed and managed.
