Northumbrian Water has unveiled a new feature on its website to help customers with accessibility.

British Sign Language (BSL) videos with a BSL translator are now available to view across a number of its key pages.

For many deaf people who use BSL as their first language, written English can be challenging as it isn’t a direct translation.

BSL is a visual language with its own grammar and structure which makes text-heavy online information difficult to navigate.

The water company has worked with Sign Solutions, a BSL translation specialist, and Recite Me, the provider of its accessibility toolbar to bring signed video content directly to its website.

This new feature aims to help, by offering BSL translations directly on the website, allowing customers to access essential information in a way that works best for them.

Barbara Anderson, Digital Experience Manager at Northumbrian Water, said: “Our website is one of the best places for our customers to access information about their water services, and we want all our customers to feel confident accessing the support they need.

“Introducing BSL was another important step in making sure our services are truly inclusive and accessible to everyone, in whichever format they need it.”

Visitors can try out the new tool by clicking the ‘Accessibility’ bar at the top of the homepage and selecting the Sign Language option within the Recite Me toolbar to see a video interpreter delivering the content in BSL.

Sophie Kang, Sales and Marketing Manager at Sign Solutions, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Recite Me and Northumbrian Water to provide Deaf customers with access to website information in BSL.

“As the first assistive toolbar to offer this functionality, Recite Me is helping to take an important step forward in breaking down communication barriers online.”

Partnering with Recite Me since 2019 for online accessibility tools, Northumbrian Water’s website also includes text-to-speech, screen reading, and reading aids.

Ross Linnett, Recite Me's Founder and CEO, said: "Adding British Sign Language to our Assistive Toolbar is an important step in breaking down barriers for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

“We’re proud to support Northumbrian Water in creating a more inclusive digital experience for its customers.”

The company is also reminding customers that those who need extra support can register for free Priority Services, which offers tailored help for individuals with additional needs.
