As the weather warms up, Essex & Suffolk Water is reminding people to stay safe when spending time outdoors and is urging the public to avoid swimming in reservoirs.
As temperatures rise, more people head outside to cool off, but swimming in reservoirs is not allowed and can present serious risks.
The company is reminding visitors that reservoirs are working sites which play a vital role in supplying drinking water to local communities and should be enjoyed safely from designated areas.
Additionally, water sports are not permitted, other than with approved organisations that have safety measures in place.
Hidden dangers include cold water shock and currents, caused by the way water is released for either river level regulation or water treatment.
David Hall, Head of Leisure and Commercial Services at Essex & Suffolk Water, said: “We know people want to make the most of the warmer weather and enjoy being outdoors, but it’s really important that our reservoirs are not used for swimming.
“Our message is simple – stay safe and avoid swimming in reservoirs. They are working sites and not designed for recreational use, and we want everyone to enjoy the summer safely.
“By using our sites responsibly, you are helping to keep both yourself and others safe, while also protecting these important locations that supply water to homes and businesses.”
Visitors are encouraged to follow on-site signage and guidance when visiting reservoirs and to take care around open water.
