Northumbrian Water has successfully completed a £1.9 million upgrade to the water network in Blyth, marking a major milestone in improving resilience and water quality for residents in the Plessey Road area.

The project, which completed in February, saw the replacement of 15km of ageing cast iron water mains with modern, durable plastic piping, as well as installing new customer service pipes for 1,200 properties.

In addition to the pipe upgrades, Northumbrian Water and its delivery partner, United Living, installed new valves throughout the network to add flexibility and resilience to the network, reducing the potential impact of bursts and ensuring more customers stay connected even during emergencies.

The water company worked closely with Northumberland County Council, pausing the works to enable work on the Northumberland Line to be carried out. Once this work was complete the water company was able to go back and finish its work.

Brian Hardy, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said: “This investment has helped maintain high-quality tap water for customers in Blyth. By upgrading the network and installing new valves, we've

strengthened the system’s resilience and enhanced its ability to protect customers’ water supplies.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the patience and understanding shown by our customers, and we’d like to thank the local council for their proactive support throughout the project. Their collaboration enabled us to deliver this work as soon as other works had been completed.”
