Work is set to start on the construction of a new water main near Sedgefield, County Durham.
Northumbrian Water, and its partner, United Infrastructure, will construct around 970 metres of new pipework to support domestic, as well as commercial and industrial growth in the area. It will also help to protect existing customers, by upgrading the local network to meet this additional demand.
The new water main will largely be constructed within the verge of the A177, running south from the High Road junction before turning into the northern end of NetPark. Traffic management will be required, to ensure the safety of the team, and of motorists. This will be manned between 7am and 7pm.
Work on this £354,000 investment is due to start at the end of September and take three months to complete.
While most of the work will be on the southbound carriageway, a road crossing will be required when construction reaches Holdforth Bridge. However, this will be done utilising traffic lights, to avoid requiring a road closure.
While the construction will pass Loverose Layby, this will be kept open.
Rach Graves, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said: “This work will support existing customers’ water supplies, and create capacity for local domestic, commercial and industrial growth.
“While we appreciate the inconvenience that the traffic management will cause, this is necessary to make sure our team, and motorists, remain safe while the work takes place. We will be using techniques such as tunnelling, to reduce the amount of time the project takes, and the manned traffic lights mitigate the risk of issues that might cause unnecessary delays.
“We appreciate the understanding and patience of motorists while we carry out this work.”
