Northumbrian Water is encouraging customers to continue using water wisely as reservoir levels across the region remain lower than expected for this time of year.
The company has published its latest monthly water demand infographic, showing that combined reservoir storage stood at 66% at the end of August. While recent rainfall has helped, more sustained wet weather will be needed throughout autumn and winter to help replenish water resources.
Northumbrian Water continues to take a range of actions to protect supplies, including carefully balancing reservoir levels, optimising water treatment processes, and carrying out essential upgrades at reservoir sites across the region.
Latest figures released by the company show:
- Combined reservoir storage ended August at 66%.
- A total of 67mm of rain fell during the month, equivalent to 91% of the long-term average for August.
- Teams have repaired 8,462 leaks so far in 2026.
- The highest demand day was 13 August, when customers used 748 million litres of water.
Katie Davis, Head of Water Service Planning, said: "While we've seen some welcome rainfall recently, our reservoir levels remain lower than we'd like for this point in the year and we still need a wet autumn and winter to help replenish water resources.
"We're doing a huge amount behind the scenes to manage supplies, including optimising water treatment processes, carefully balancing reservoir levels and we are carrying out important investment work at a number of key reservoir sites across the region.
"Customers can continue to play an important role too. Simple actions such as taking shorter showers, and only running washing machines and dishwashers with full loads, can all help reduce demand.
“Customers can also help by capturing as much rain as possible when it does arrive by installing water butts or checking existing ones are connected properly. This will help keep gardens healthy through drier spells.
"Every litre saved helps. We'll continue monitoring conditions closely, we're asking everyone to keep using water wisely and help us protect supplies for the months ahead."
