Northumbrian Water will start work on a major investment in Ponteland to help improve the resilience, reliability, and quality of water supplies for local customers.
The scheme, which will be delivered by Northumbrian Water's partners at United Infrastructure, will see two kilometers of new water main installed in Ponteland, Northumberland.
Work is due to begin on Monday 24 August 2026 and is expected to be completed by October 2026.
The £493,000 investment forms part of the company's ongoing programme to maintain and improve the region's water network, helping to ensure that customers continue to receive high-quality drinking water for years to come.
To enable the work to be carried out safely and efficiently, a number of temporary traffic management measures will be in place throughout the project.
From Monday 24 August 2026 to 14 September 2026, multi-way temporary traffic lights will be in operation on the A696 between The Beeches and Belsay Road.
Between Tuesday 1 September 2026 and 14 October 2026, a temporary road closure will also be in place on the U9049 Road to West Newham.
And from Monday 5 October 2026 to 23 October 2026 a temporary road closure will be in place between Highlander Junction and March Burn Junction.
Brian Hardy, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said: "We're investing in our water network in Ponteland to help ensure customers continue to receive a reliable, high-quality water supply both now and in the future."
"We know customers in this area have experienced a number of bursts on the existing water main over recent years, and we've listened to the feedback they've provided.
"We appreciate that work of this nature can cause some disruption and we'd like to thank local residents and road users for their patience while we carry out these essential improvements. We've carefully planned the programme and will work to keep any inconvenience to a minimum while the new water main is installed."
Last week, the water company hosted its busiest ever Local Action event in Ponteland, with 74 customers attending to talk to experts about our infrastructure projects, river quality, water bills, and so much more.
In the feedback, customers commented that their local “plans seem well constructed”, are “needed and welcome”, and that they have a “record of responsible resource and environmental management”.
