A pipe cleaning project, which will benefit 500,000 customers, is due to get underway in Newcastle next month.

Northumbrian Water is cleaning and upgrading 9 kilometres of pipe at 18 different locations across North Tyneside, Gateshead and Newcastle.

Work will begin in the Benwell area of Newcastle from Thursday November 1, 2018 and will be carried out by Northumbrian Water’s supply partners, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB).

Although it will start in the grassland on Denton Road, near to the Excelsior Academy, the project team will be carrying out short periods of 12 different works across the Benwell area until June 2019.

Small excavations will be made in the roads and work will involve pressure jetting the water mains to remove the harmless sediment that builds up in the pipework over time. Customers will be notified in advance as the work progresses.

Northumbrian Water′s Project Manager, Graeme Ridley, said: "During the next eight months, we’ll be working with MMB to clean and upgrade the mains so that our customers continue to receive excellent tap water quality, now and into the future.

"We appreciate that there might be some short term disruption as we move across the area, carrying out this essential work. We′ll be in some locations for just two days, and in other locations for up to two weeks, but we are working closely with Newcastle City Council and will be providing people with information in advance."
