So-called ‘Blue Monday,’ which falls today, January 17, is said to be the worst day of the year due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold dark nights, and the arrival of unpaid Christmas credit card bills.
Anyone who is struggling with debt, worried about paying their water bill or is just in need of free financial advice, is being encouraged to contact Northumbrian Water for help.
The North East water firm says it is committed to helping customers who are in need to have water without the worry, by offering a wide range of assistance - including financial support.
From reducing arrears and re-scheduling payments to ease debt problems, a comprehensive package of help is available from Northumbrian Water, in partnership with StepChange Debt Charity.
They may also be able to offer a reduction on water bills by up to 50% for customers whose household income is less than £16,385 and if their water bill is more than 3% of the household income after rent or mortgage payments.
Head of Income for Northumbrian Water, Mark Wilkinson, said: “We understand that January can be a challenging time for many people, especially this year with the rising costs of living and the added pressures of the coronavirus pandemic.
“It’s tempting to brush any financial worries under the carpet, but it’s important to be open when it comes to debt. Admitting that bills are getting a bit tight is a big step and our trained teams are ready to work with and support anyone who is in need.
“This Blue Monday we want to reassure our customers that there are lots of ways that we can offer support and we would urge them to get in touch with us, so they don’t have to face their worries alone. Help is available.”
