A Gateshead town is set to benefit from a flood reduction project and residents are being invited to find out more about it.

Northumbrian Water is looking at options to reduce the risk of flooding in the Birtley area, by upgrading the existing sewer.

The work, which is likely to begin in January 2019, will be located in the car park behind Harraton Terrace and across the junction with Durham Road (A167), near to Morrisons. Work will also be carried out in land owned by Komatsu and behind properties in Arndale House.

Northumbrian Water′s supply partners, Mott Macdonald Bentley, will carry out the work, which is expected to take up to a year to complete.

Residents in Birtley are being invited to meet the project team and find out more about the proposals next week.

Northumbrian Water′s community vehicle ‘Flo′ will be located in the car park behind Harraton Terrace, where the work would take place, on Monday July 23, 2018 between 10.00am and 2.00pm.

The project team will also be at The Hub Resource Centre, Harraton Terrace, DH3 2QG on Tuesday July 24, 2018 between 4.00pm and 7.00pm.

Northumbrian Water′s Project Manager, Tina Robinson, said: "We want to reduce the risk of flooding in future, as we know how devastating it can be for our customers.

"We′ve identified an opportunity in Birtley where we are able to do just that, by upsizing our sewer network to increase its capacity, which will help reduce flood risk, particularly during times of heavy rainfall.

"We′re looking forward to sharing our proposals with local people and would welcome their say on them."
