North East teachers and careers advisers have taken part in a special industry day event at a water treatment works to learn about careers in the industry.
Northumbrian Water and the Education Development Trust held the event today (Friday 6 December) to give the visitors an insight into the many roles that go into delivering water and wastewater services.
The guests, who are all involved in delivering careers advice to pupils in schools, colleges and even for housing providers, were also given a behind the scenes tour of the Broken Scar Water Treatment Works, to see how Northumbrian Water supplies the Darlington and Tees Valley area with drinking water.
Sessions were also held to discuss the skills required for a range of careers in the water industry, while representatives of Northumbrian Water's Academy team outlined classroom activities that the teachers can take back to use with pupils.
Sophie Carvin, Northumbrian Water's Academy Manager, said: "People are often amazed by the many different jobs that make up a water company. We have more than 700 distinct roles within our business, so this was a fantastic opportunity to give people who are directly involved with delivering careers advice an insight that we hope can help influence and inspire young people to consider our industry as a great place to work."
Northumbrian Water Group is part of the Energy & Utilities Skills (EU Skills) Partnership, a group of more than 20 organisations that aims to help fill the need to employ a total of 221,000 new recruits into the sector by 2027.
