A "Refill Army" is being mobilised in the North East in the battle against plastic pollution.
As part of activity to mark the first ever National Refill Day (September 27), Northumbrian Water will be spending two days in the heart of Newcastle, encouraging people to ditch their single-use plastic bottles.
And while the team will be in Northumberland Street on Wednesday and Thursday, September 26 and 27, a Refill Army of employees will be out and about signing up businesses to become Refill Stations, adding to the 600-plus that have already signed up across the North East.

Refill Stations are places where people can fill up their refillable bottles with tap water, free of charge. Businesses simply need to allow people to bring in their bottles to be topped up from the tap. Window stickers are supplied to help them to promote their part in the scheme, and they can also register on the Refill app, which people use to find their nearest station.
The aim of Refill, which was set up by Bristol-based not for profit organisation City To Sea, is to reduce the reliance upon single-use plastic bottles.

Northumbrian Water has spent the year of 2018 recruiting Refill Stations and working with organisations and businesses to create a network for people to fill up.
