Six companies have come together to provide an award-winning programme of unique opportunities for young people in the North East.

Northumbrian Water, Esh-MWH Joint Venture, Turner & Townsend, Interserve, MMB and Wood Group were recognised at the Constructing Excellence North East Awards 2018, for their joint project to attract and develop their workforce of the future.

The ‘Run2 Academy′ initiative, which is creating sustainable employment programmes in the water and construction industry, scooped the top award in the People Development category at the prestigious ceremony last week (Friday June 15, 2018).

It aims to attract talented people to the industry and show that it is a great place to work, by implementing a number of different programmes, such as shared industry placements, work experience placements and apprenticeships.

As part of the initiative, the flagship Shared Summer Placement allowed undergraduate students to take on a 12-week placement, rotating their time among the six leading North East firms, while receiving invaluable skills and experience working on real life construction projects.

Out of the seven undergraduate students employed during the Shared Summer Programme in 2017, five of them went on to gain further employment or engagement opportunities.

Richard Woodhouse, Project Manager for Northumbrian Water, said: "We′re delighted that our Run2 Academy has been hailed as a shining example at the Constructing Excellence Awards.
"It′s a really exciting programme where we′re able to offer young people the practical experience alongside their academic studies and support them at key stages of their education.

"The success of the Run2 Academy is thanks to the collaborative approach we′ve taken with our partners, meaning the students are able to follow projects all the way from conception to completion."

Employees from the Run2 Academy will be out visiting schools, universities and colleges across the region for students to find out more.
