Pensioners and households on low incomes across the North East could be eligible for a discount of up to 40% off their water bill, and Northumbrian Water is encouraging its customers to check if they qualify as part of Talk Money Week (3 –7 November).
With more than 116,000 customers already receiving financial support from the water company, it’s raising awareness of the range of schemes it offers to help ease the pressure on struggling people.
Those who have a total household income of less than £26,000, or receive Pension Credit, and spend more than 3% of their income - after their mortgage or rent - on water, may be eligible from a Low-Income Discount.
For customers who are struggling to manage their day-to-day bills, and have more money going out than coming in each month, the company’s bill discount scheme could provide even more help. This scheme reduces current charges by up to 50%.
Other support options include flexible monthly payment plans, payment breaks and free debt advice.
Northumbrian Water can also cap bills for metered customers who are in receipt of an income-related benefit and have high water use due to medical needs or a large family.
In some cases, switching to a water meter could also help customers save money by only paying for what they use, and the water company can help assess whether it’s the right choice.
Mark Wilkinson, Head of Income for Northumbrian Water said: "Talk Money Week is a great opportunity for us to remind our customers we’re here to help.
“We know that for many people in our region, money is tight and the run-up to Christmas can make things even harder.
“The last thing we want is for anyone to feel anxious about paying their water bill. That’s why we’re asking customers to talk to us. We have a range of support options, and we’ll work with you to find the right solution.”
Talk Money Week, run by the Money and Pensions Service, is all about encouraging people to open up about money and take steps toward financial wellbeing.
