With the North East braced for snow this week, Northumbrian Water is encouraging its customers to take simple steps to keep their homes warm and protect themselves from the misery of frozen or burst pipes.

When temperatures drop, water inside pipes can freeze and expand, causing pipes to split or burst. This can lead to flooding, expensive repairs, and a lot of stress and inconvenience.

By taking a few simple precautions now, people can avoid frozen water pipes in their homes.

Jim Howey, Head of Water Networks at Northumbrian Water, said: “Cold spells can cause problems for pipework, but a few quick checks now can save you a lot of hassle later.

“Fixing dripping taps, insulating pipes and knowing where your stop tap is, are just a couple of simple things you can do that can make a big difference.”

Customers can visit www.nwl.co.uk/winter for practical tips to prevent frozen pipes and advice on what to do if a pipe freezes or bursts.

For those who might need a plumber, WaterSafe-approved plumbers are recommended by water companies and can be found online at www.watersafe.org.uk.

Cold weather can also increase the number of burst pipes and leaks on Northumbrian Water’s network, as well as customers’ own pipework. If you spot a leak in the street, report it online at www.nwl.co.uk/leaks or call 0800 393 084.

For anyone needing extra support this winter, whether that’s due to age, disability, Northumbrian Water’s Priority Services are free to sign up for at www.nwl.co.uk/priorityservices.

Top tips to avoid frozen pipes

  • Insulate pipes and water tanks, especially in unheated areas like lofts, garages, and outbuildings.
  • Fix dripping taps - even a small drip can freeze and block pipes.
  • Keep your home heated at a low level during cold spells.
  • Know where your stop tap is and check it works.
  • If you’re away, leave heating on low or turn off the stop tap for longer absences.
  • Drain and protect outdoor taps with a tap cover.
  • Check your boiler has been serviced and minimise draughts from doors and windows.

If your pipes freeze

  • Turn off the water supply at the stop tap.
  • Check if the pipe has burst.
  • Open affected taps and thaw gently using a hair dryer, hot water bottles, or towels soaked in warm water.
  • Never use a naked flame or blowtorch.

If a pipe bursts

  • Turn off the stop tap and boiler.
  • Open all taps to drain the system.
  • Switch off electrics at the mains if the water is near sockets.
  • Check your home insurance for cover.
  • Find a local, approved plumber at www.watersafe.org.uk or call 0333 207 9030.
