Progress is being made on a vital upgrade to a water main between Latchingdon and Mayland, Essex.

Essex & Suffolk Water’s £650,000 project, which involves replacing and renewing 2.9km of ageing pipework, stretches from the junction with Burnham Road in Latchingdon to the junction of The Drive/Woodland Park Chase in Mayland.

This vital work started in July 2025 and is expected to complete in November (2025) and most of the work is being carried out in nearby fields to reduce disruption.

However, a section of the pipe renewal work between the B1018 Burnham Road and just east of Lawlinge Road, in Latchingdon, requires work within the road.

For the team to carry out the work safely, a road closure will be in place from Monday 6th October 2025, for approximately six weeks.

The closure has been scheduled to begin after the peak summer season, helping to minimise the impact on seasonal businesses, especially those near the River Blackwater.

The road closure will be in place along Steeple Road from the B1010 Burnham Road at Latchingdon to The Drive at Mayland. This means traffic will still be able to travel in both directions between the B1021 near Bradwell-on-Sea and Steeple, Mayland and Maylandsea.

An official diversion, agreed with Essex County Council Highways, will be in place, directing traffic to roads of the same size or larger than that which is closed.

Daren Still Project Manager for Essex and Suffolk Water said:

“We are working closely with Essex County Council Highways, we have planned a diversion route suitable for all vehicle types. Clear signage will be in place along the route, including Access Only and Businesses Open as Usual signs, to support local access and trade.

“We would like to thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we carry out this important work to improve water quality in the area.”
