Northumbrian Water is expanding its low income discount, making it easier for thousands more customers across the North East to receive support with their water bills.
From April, households with a total income under £30,000 – up from the previous £26,000 threshold – may now qualify for a discount of up to 50% on their annual bill.
The discount is available for customers whose water bill costs more than 4% of their net household income, after their mortgage or rent payments, making sure support goes to those whose water bills take up a larger share of their income.
As a result, more families, pensioners, and individuals on low incomes can get help at a time when many continue to feel the cost-of-living pressure.
Lisa Connell, Customer Service Manager for Northumbrian Water said: “We know that many of our customers are worried about paying their bills. By increasing the household income threshold, we’re making sure more people get the support they need when they need it most.
“Even if someone isn’t eligible for the low income discount, we would still encourage them to get in touch if they’re finding things difficult. There are lots of ways we can help, from setting up flexible payment plans, seeing if they’re eligible for one of our other discounted tariffs, or referring them for free, independent debt advice.”
The changes come as Northumbrian Water continues to invest £2.6bn in the North East over the five-year period to 2030, to improve its water and sewerage services for customers, and protect the environment.
While bills will change from April as part of this investment, the company is committed to keeping water affordable, with a number of support schemes designed to help anyone who needs it.
