Biodiversity
How do we work to protect and enhance biodiversity?

We have a strategy which supports the Government's national framework on biodiversity, published in July 2012 (the successor to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan).

The original UK Biodiversity Action Plan species and habitats have also been used to draw up a list of priority habitats and species, known as the Section 41 lists.

These lists form part of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act and are an important focus for conservation management work. This Act also places a duty on all water and sewerage companies to maintain, and where possible, enhance biodiversity on their landholdings.

Locally, we work with environmental partners like the:

  • Wildlife Trusts
  • Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnerships
  • Land Trust, and
  • National Trust

to deliver site management work and enhancement schemes.
